Charlton hauled themselves out of the drop zone after picking up a point in a 0-0 tie at Manchester City on Friday.

It was a good result for the visitors as they moved out of the bottom three for the first time since September.

The home side had a whirlwind start but Emile Mpenza saw his header cleared off the line and Joey Barton was also denied twice by Charlton's keeper Scott Carson before half-time.

Charlton's best chance came on 74th minutes, but was prodded by Zheng Zhi. Darren Bents and Marcus Bents combined to send Zheng down the middle inside the area, but Nedum Onuoha sliding tackle put just enough pressure on the Chinese before the ball eventually rolled wide of the left hand post.

Charlton barely moved ahead of Sheffield United and into 17th place with the draw. The two teams both have 31 points and the same goal difference, but Charlton has scored 29 goals this season while United has only 25.

Everton moved up two places to fifth in the English Premier League with a 4-1 win over Fulham.

Fulham led on 22 minutes when Carlos Bocanegra headed in a corner but the edge just lasted two minutes before Everton's Lee Carsley scored from a left-wing cross. In the 34th, Alan Stubbs headed home after a free kick to give home side the lead.

James Vaughan made it 3-1 just before halftime and substitute Victor Anichebe wrapped it up 10 minutes from time.
