A South Korean media outlet says Zhang Ziyi is the most unpopular Chinese actress, saying that even though she has international fame, criticism about her in China is very high.

The comment concluded the situation is caused by the imbalance between her film characters and her social role. An actress' film characters should be in tandem with her country's status and people's characteristics.

It said many Chinese Internet users criticize her role choices. Others say she is too arrogant and doesn't make good films worth watching.

Take "Memoirs of a Geisha" for example. Chinese people aren't proud of Zhang's turn in the Hollywood spotlight because they thought the love story between a Chinese actress and a Japanese actor in the movie full of porn, the article said.

Japanese audiences held a high opinion of Zhang in the role as the geisha, but many Chinese believe Zhang has not clearly distinguished her film characters and her social role.

The comment added most Chinese people look down on women who are too aggressive in pursuit of fame and fortune. Zhang Ziyi's quick rising in showbiz is considered as rampant careerism.
