As announced on Thursday in Los Angeles, hit medical drama "Grey's Anatomy," and suspense drama "24" won nominations for best drama against "House," "The Sopranos" and "The West Wing" for the 58th Emmy Awards.
Cable channel TNT's six-part miniseries Into the West, produced by Oscar-winning director Steven Spielberg, scored the biggest tally among all programs vying for Emmys this year with 16 nominations.
Last year's winner for best comedy series, Desperate Housewives, was shut out in series and acting categories with one awkward exception: Alfre Woodard, who has since left the show, was nominated for best supporting actress.
On the other hand, there were several new deserving names on the Emmy list including Denis Leary of Rescue Me (best actor-drama); Kyra Sedgwick of The Closer (best actress-drama); Houstonian Chandra Wilson of Grey's Anatomy (supporting actress-drama); Gregory Itzin of 24 (supporting actor-drama); and Jaime Pressly of My Name Is Earl (supporting actress-comedy).
Will & Grace, a winner of 14 Emmys that ended its run this past season, was the most nominated sitcom, gaining recognition in 10 categories, but it failed to earn a nod for best comedy series.
The 58th annual Primetime Emmy Awards, hosted by comedian Conan O'Brien, will be broadcast live from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on August 27.
