All 420 students from Hong Kong and Macao have finished their summer internship in Guangzhou. The last batch of them participated in an ending ceremony on August 24th, sharing what they have done and the fun stories during the one-month project.

Hua Yimei, Director of Guangzhou’s Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office, said the office provided 407 intern positions in 57 leading enterprises in such fields as accounting, finance architecture, hotel management and advertisement, and matched these positions with students majors this year.

“We hope students from Hong Kong and Macao could experience the local working environment and development through superior projects like this, and eventually they could participate in the construction of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Bay Area and the Belt and Road Initiative to share the opportunities popping up here,” said Hua Yimei.

Xu Yaqi is a senior student of Sun-Yat-Sen University and the president of Hong Kong Students’ Association of Canton (HKSAC). She said this is her second time to join the project and she worked for Grandbuy, the largest traditional retailer in Guangzhou.

“I have the chance to work at Grandbuy’s retail store for two weeks and then its e-commerce branch for three weeks,” said Xu, “I found less people go shopping at the malls in Guangzhou. They usually try the products at stores and buy them online.”

But when working for the e-commerce branch, Xu Yaqi was surprised at the development of the online retailers and the logistics in mainland China. “I’m also surprised at the way that Grandbuy is working so hard to expand its online sales channels and face new challenges.”

As the president of HKSAC, Xu Yaqi said she saw many Hong Kong students hesitate a lot before graduating from universities in Guangzhou. But her association did a survey recently and found more Hong Kong students are willing to stay in Guangdong or do business between Guangdong and Hong Kong.

“It’s difficult to find jobs in Hong Kong in some fields, but we find more opportunities here. The transportation is becoming more convenient as well. I will apply the new mainland residence permit in September and hope I could gain some good offers here,” said Xu.
