China Post started selling the Year of the Dog collector’s stamps this Friday, Jan. 5, 2018 in preparation for Chinese New Year.

A launch ceremony was held by Guangzhou Post Stamp Office at the Guangzhou Library this morning (Jan. 5), unveiling the Dog Year collector’s stamps and a set of flower themedd postcards. A total of 400 stamp collecting enthusiasts and 100 lucky residents born in the Year of the Dog were invited to this special event.

Two designs for the Dog Year collector’s stamps have been released, one featuring a male black-and-white husky standing proud, embodying prosperity and protection, and the other featuring a female brown Shiba Inu licking her black cub, representing family and parental love.

The stamps have been designed by Zhou Lingzhao, a well-known artist who also helped create the second, third and fourth editions of the renminbi, the Chinese currency, as well as the national emblem.

The dog is the 11th animal in the 12-year cycle of the Chinese zodiac, said to symbolize loyalty, honesty, safety, prosperity and family unity.

In order to better demonstrate Guangzhou’s unique charm, a set of 12 flower themed postcards were also released at the ceremony. The twelve flowers featured on the postcards are the kapok (the city flower of Guangzhou), peach blossom, bauhinia, Mucuna birdwoodiana, michelia alba, crape myrtle, delonix regia, sunflower, lotus, bougainvillea, Ceiba insignis, and plum blossom.

The postcards have been designed by Wu Guanying, the principal designer of the mascot ‘Fuwa’ for the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympic Games.

Only limited sets have been printed, the fewest in history and each set costs 2.4 yuan (35 US cents).

The above mentioned stamps and postcards, along with many other collectibles, are available at post offices throughout the city and a few other selected locations. You can find out more about the stamps, postcards and related themed activities via the following Guangzhou Post Office’s official WeChat accounts ‘微邮筒’, ‘广州邮政’ and ‘广州邮政集邮’ or via the hotline number 11185.
