U.S. Vice President Dick Cheneyon Sunday (Sep 10th) spoke highly of Pakistan for its important role in the search for terrorists along its border with Afghanistan.

"The fact is we've captured and killed more al-Qaeda in Pakistan than any place else in the world in the last five years," Cheney said in an interview with NBC television before the fifth anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks on the United States.

Cheney praised Pakistani President Gen. Pervez Musharraf as "a man who has demonstrated great courage under very difficult political circumstances and has been a great ally for the United States."

Cheney rejected claims that Pakistan had failed to cooperate in the search for Osama bin Laden, leader of al-Qaeda who is said to be responsible for 9/11 terror attacks.

Pakistan has some 80,000 troops along the border with Afghanistan to hunt down Taliban militants and Al-Qaeda fugitives, who were believed to have sneaked into the rugged region after the U.S. ouster of the Taliban regime in late 2001.

But some Islamist insurgents are still able to enter Afghanistan, with Afghan and some foreign officials alleging that Taliban and al-Qaeda leaders based in Pakistan are training the militants and sending them over.
