[Week 18] 21st Century Maritime Silk Road Starts in Guangzhou

Dating back to the Qin Dynasty (221BC – 207 BC), Guangzhou had already become one of the starting ports of the Maritime Silk Road, the access point to the Pearl River Delta. Guangzhou still plays a key role in the construction of the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road.

In 2014, the throughput of Guangzhou Port achieved 500 million tons and its volume of containers exceeded 16,626 million TEU (Twenty-feet Equivalent Unit). The overall throughput and container volume of Guangzhou Port ranks among the top 10 in the world.

Nansha Port District has formed an industrial layout of containers, automobiles, food and petrochemicals with 50 berths in total.

According to Deputy Director of the Administration Committee of FTZ Nansha Area Zhang Benhua, the Guangzhou Port Group currently has 93 routes in total including 52 foreign trade routes, seven European routes in different directions, six American routes, 16 Southeast Asian routes, 16 African routes, six Middle East routes and one Australian route.
