Guangzhou Administration of Industry and Commerce officials recently unveiled the Standards of Guangzhou for Business Administration of Food Supermarkets, which take effect April 1 and cover matters concerning ready-to-eat and short-dated food and practitioner health.

The new policy requires that a series of systems for food safety, regular inspection, correction supervision, reward and punishment and administration records should be established and implemented and that a system of incoming food inspection recording should be simultaneously established.

According to the new policy, food supermarkets must designate separate zones to sell ready-to-eat food and keep such food away from other kinds of food. Bulk read-to-eat food must also be covered by dust-proof materials and isolation facilities and touch-forbidding signs are required to be on display.

The policy requires that food supermarkets establish and implement a system of food exit, promptly suspend operations in the event of finding substandard food and report relevant information to local administrative departments of food safety.

Food supermarkets must also formulate plans for handling food safety accidents. Within two hours from the occurrence of accidents, reports must be sent to relevant administrative departments within the local government.
