A grand ceremony was held on August 25 launching construction on 60 key projects to celebrate Shenzhen's 30th anniversary as a Special Economic Zone (SEZ). The new projects are aimed at improving traffic between Longgang, Bao'an, Futian and Luohu districts, city transport commission officials said last week.

The 3.25-km extension of Caitian Road will connect Caitian Flyover in Futian and Xinqu Boulevard in Longhua in Bao'an. The two-way six-lane road is expected to be completed in two years.

The Meiguan Expressway will be expanded to a two-way eight-lane road and the Shenhua Expressway, linking Fulong Road and Longguan Expressway, is designed to serve residents in Longgang and Luohu after it is completed.

Construction also began last week on three hospital projects, including the new inpatients' department building of Beijing University Shenzhen Hospital and a new building at the Shenzhen No. 2 People's Hospital and Baohe Hosptial in Longgang District. The inpatients' building at Beijing University Shenzhen Hospital, covering 14,000 square meters, will have 630 beds when opened in 2014. The new building at the No. 2 hospital, which will also open in 2014, will have 626 beds. Baohe Hospital is designed for 800 beds and will open in 2013.

The city also plans to build three reservoirs and diversion projects around Gongming to ensure the city's water supply. Construction work also started on three 50,000-ton berths at Yantian port.

Shenzhen Party Chief Wang Rong and Shenzhen Mayor Xu Qin visited 93-year-old Yuan Geng, founder of the Shekou Industrial Zone who is well-known as a "reform pioneer". Wang and Xu also visited Ma Fuyuan, former president of the Shenzhen SEG Group, one of the city's biggest and oldest electronics groups.
