| On July 1, the average electricity prices in Guangdong is raised by 0.022 yuan per kWh, and the electricity charges for commercial units increases 0.0278 yuan per kWh.
Urban and rural residents, the farming and fertilizer production sectors were exempted from the price rise.
Officials from Price Control Bureau said the soaring coal price is the main factor behind higher electricity charges. But the raise of the power tariff cannot totally offset power companies' losses.
The province will face a shortage of electric power as much as 6.3 million kilowatts in July and August, when the electricity use rises along with the mercury, according to a release by the Guangdong Economic and Trade Commission (GETC).
