| With an agreement on economic cooperation between Guangzhou, Zhaoqing and Foshan that was signed last week, a breakthrough forwarding progress has been made in Phase II of the Guangzhou-Zhaoqing Expressway which was launched last June. With pavement construction bidding invited from across the country, the expressway is expected to be open to traffic by the end of 2010.
Phase II of the Guangzhou-Zhaoqing Expressway, approved by the Development and Reform Commission of Guangdong Province, has been listed as a national project and supported with relevant funds having been allocated. Running between Nanhai and Sanshui, Phase II of the Guangzhou - Zhaoqing Expressway is 5.386 kilometer long project with six traffic lanes.
Since Guangzhou launched the economic cooperation program with Foshan and Zhaoqing, the three parties have attached great importance to construction of traffic infrastructures. As a result, construction on expressways, including the Guangzhao (Guangzhou-Zhaoqing) expressway, the Erguang (Erlianhaote-Guangzhou) expressway, the Zhaohua (Zhaoqing-Huadu) expressway and the expressway that goes 'round the Pearl River Delta, there has been a speed-up in terms of the priority given to the connection of major infrastructures between the three cities. The connections include the Guangzhou New Railway Station, the Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport and Nansha Port.
According to plans presented, there will be 13 highways, 4 railway lines, 1 light rail facility, 3 waterways and 7 ports that join Zhaoqing with Guangzhou and Foshan. The intercity light rail between Guangzhou, Foshan and Zhaoqing will begin construction during the second half of 2009.
