SHENZHEN'S first A/H1N1 flu patient was discharged from No. 3 People's Hospital on Thursday (June 4)聽after eight days of treatment.
The 22-year-old Chinese-American, John Yuk Kong, tested negative twice and remained healthy after three days of medical observation, said Liu Yingxia, director of the epidemic control and prevention department of the hospital.
"His discharge is in line with regulations issued by the Health Ministry," Liu said.
The hospital granted him a health certificate, with which he could return to America or travel around China.
"I am very happy with the treatment, which was better than expected," Kong said. 鈥淭he first thing I want to do is go home.鈥
Kong, however, is concerned about his sister, Judy Yuk Kong, 21, the only patient who still tests positive despite the disappearance of all symptoms.
Medical specialists decided to change her prescription because they thought that her body might be resistant to Tamiflu, Liu said.
The siblings had arrived from the United States when they were stopped by quarantine authorities while entering Shenzhen through the Luohu Checkpoint on May 27. They were confirmed to have the virus on May 29.
"It was the first time that John and Judy had come to China to visit relatives so they were very nervous in the beginning," said their aunt, surnamed Chen, who came from Dongguan on Thursday to pick up her nephew. "But now I think they are all right."
Another patient, 13-year-old Chinese-Canadian Amy Huang, is expected to stay in the hospital for at least one more week because she has pneumonia. "She needs at least one week for complete recovery," said Liu.
Two sisters surnamed Wu, who go to school in the United States, are also in quarantine but are expected to be released soon.
