Exciting scene - first boarding in the new airport
The new Baiyun International Airport in Guangzhou, capital of South China's Guangdong Province, officially opens for business today (August 5th) after construction of nearly four years.
The first flight takes off from the new airport at 7 o'clock this morning to Haikou, capital of South China's Hainan Province.
"The take-off of the first flight marks the successful relocation of the new airport. The airport will make every effort to become an internationally well-known airport," expresses Zhang Chunlin, president of the Guangdong Airport Management Group at a ceremony held at 6:20 am.
Flight CZ328 from Los Angeles will be the first flight to arrive here, releases source.
It is estimated that 583 flights will land or take off at the new airport today, according to Zhang.
More than 70,000 pieces of equipment will be tranfered to the new airport in the next few days. All the relocation work should be finished by Saturday (August 7th).
The old airport ceased operation when the last flight landed just before midnight on Wednesday (August 4th). The transfer work began earlier when China Southern Airlines, the airport's base airline company, moved planes and equipment to the new site.
