Chen Shaoji was elected chairman of the provincial CPPCC committee at the second session of the Ninth Guangdong Provincial Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) that ended Friday (Feb. 13).
Chen, born in 1945, served as deputy secretary of Guangdong Provincial Committee of the CPC since 2000.
At a meeting with consuls from Germany, the United States and Canada in Guangzhou, the newly elected chairman said Friday afternoon, the new committee would contribute more effort to safeguarding the rights of migrant workers, pay more attention to hot issues related to farmers and promote cooperation between Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao under the CEPA framework.
The session received 739 proposals, 43.6 percent more than previous year, from 822 representatives of the provincial CPPCC committee.
In another development, the Second Session of the Tenth Guangdong Provincial People's Congress drew to a close Sunday afternoon.
In the past six days, 787 deputies to the congress had hot discussions on the government report about Guangdong Province's future development by Governor Huang Huahua and reviewed budget reports.
