2008 was an important year for Guangzhou's service sector with added value in the tertiary industry reaching nearly 80 percent of the city's economic growth.

As a major source of GDP growth, service industries grew 11.4 percent year-on-year, generating over 230 billion RMB in 2008.

According to Guangzhou Daily report, Guangzhou trade officials are no longer satisfied with the city's brisk retail market. Many different types of trading centers such as the Guangdong Plastic Trading Center, South China Metal Materials Trading Center and the South China Food Trading Center have been built up in the city.

In an aim to transform Guangzhou into a major logistics center for all of south-east Asia, the city is currently developing its logistics industry and building a platform for large-volume trading.
