On the afternoon of June 8th, according to a discussion detailing measures to improve the air quality before the 16th Guangzhou Asian Games are held, and an introduction of air pollution prevention measures made at an executive meeting presided over by Mayor Zhang Guangning, Guangzhou will fight for support by the provincial government to work with neighboring cities such as Foshan, Dongguan, Zhongshan and Shenzhen, to effectively control air pollution.

Since last year, when the plan for air pollution prevention was launched at a work meeting on environmental protection, Guangzhou has achieved considerable progress in air pollution prevention by strictly implementing the Plan for Air Pollution Control in Guangzhou, focusing on the "50 Sections" cited in the plan.

According to Mayor Zhang, Guangzhou will tighten controls on industrial pollution, exhaust emissions, pollution caused by catering services, volatile organic compounds and dust at construction sites as the major focus.

Priority will be also given to joint-controls on air pollution. The Mayor said that Guangzhou would cooperate with such neighboring cities as Foshan, Dongguan, Zhongshan and Shenzhen in an effort to establish effective controls on air pollution sources for the coming 16th Asian Games.
