Although the 105th China Import and Export Fair (Canton Fair) will open on Wednesday, and despite lower prices, the average occupation rate of the star hotels in Guangzhou is only 60% during what is usually a 'golden time'.
Daily rates for a five-star room during the 2008 Canton Fair average around 2,200 yuan (322 USD), with rates down to around 1,438 yuan (211 USD) at the top end and 800 yuan (117 USD) at the lower end.
Prices of four-star rooms have decreased dramatically to 600 to 800 yuan (88 to 117 USD), nearly half of the 2008 average of 1,530 yuan (224 USD).
Fair visitors to hotels near the Pazhou Complex and Guangzhou East Railway Station have pushed occupancy rates up to about 80%, while those in other areas are only 60%. Occupancy of premium five-star rooms is only around 10%銆
By contrast, economy hotels have attracted most of the fair guests. According to the Guangzhou Tourism Association, over 80% of the rooms in economy hotels have been booked during the Phrase one, 20% up than the same period of last year.
