A container ship, the Dong Yue, left the Guangzhou Container Terminal (GCT) for the Port of Kaohsiung at 15:00 on February 12th. The sailing signifys the inauguration of direct container line service between Guangzhou and Taiwan. Without transfers, about 24 hours can be saved by using this service.

The container ship, holding 600 TEU's, belongs to the China United Lines Ltd company and leaves GCT for Yantian on Wednesdays via Shantou, Kaohsiung and Taichung. Additionally, the company operates another direct container line between Huangpu Port and Yantian, by way of Shekou, Taichung and Kaohsiung. It takes about thirty hours to make the voyage between GCT and Kaohsiung.

The company will cooperate with the Guangzhou Port authority and shipping companies making voyages between south China and Taiwan convenient, low-cost and time-saving via these direct lines. Currently, two voyages a week help speed up cargo handling. In addition, the new line can facilitate services for companies in Guangzhou and Dongguang having access to Guangzhou Port by railway or highway.

Since direct lines were inaugurated on December 15th 2008, two liners operated by COSCO Group, the Yuan He and the Oceania, have temporarily served via Nansha Port. Besides the Dong Yue and the Fu Chun, another four qualified liners will come into service for direct shipping line service between south China and Taiwan in the near future.
