Despite the current global financial crisis, Guangzhou, having been prosperous for both business and trade for over one thousand years, still featured strong powers of consumption, with citizens tasting breakfast tea and shopping as they used to.

According to statistics, the total retail sales of social consumer goods in 2008 were expected to exceed RMB300 billion. It would be the 20th year for Guangzhou to find its way into the first three top cities in China in terms of retail sales of social consumer goods.

Statistics also showed that the total retail sales of social consumer goods increased from RMB100 billion in 2000 to RMB200 billion in 2006. However, the figure again increased by RMB100 billion within last two years.

Thanks to the business planning, the number of businesses increased by over 30 thousand in 2008, the largest number it has ever seen. Twelve large chain stores and supermarkets, covering 250 thousand square meters in total, have been opened. In addition, six more large shopping centers will begin service in 2009.

Meanwhile, Guangzhou seized the opportunity of hosting the 16th Asian Games to formulate nine measures to promote business.

The nine measures were focused on the infrastructure concerning the Asian Games, construction of shopping malls, supermarkets, franchised stores and the upgrading of large businesses in downtown Guangzhou.

Also, some streets in the downtown , including Baiyun Avenue and those along both banks of the Pearl River, would turn into clusters of restaurants which serve delicacies.

In addition, payment by credit cards would be available in all major business zones, luxury hotels, businesses around the Asian Games Village and major restaurants.

Moreover, a sports consumer center will be built where lots of the world's famous brands would be gathered. Besides, Guangzhou would promote green energy, optimize the consumer environment and provide financial support for local brands.
