The latest survey by the Guangzhou Academy of Social Sciences on foreigners living in Guangzhou (Foreigners under this survey refer to those non-ethnic Chinese with foreign passports) showed that the foreigners living in Guangzhou have surged for the past three years. By the end of 2006, foreigners registered as Long Term Residency (including permanent residency, but excluding those from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan) in Guangzhou reached 18, 686, up 46% over 2004. The foreigners on a short term stay basis in Guangzhou for the same period recorded over 58,000 person-times.
The long term and permanent residency foreigners in Guangzhou come from 153 countries in Asia, Africa, South America, North America, Europe and Oceania.
Generally speaking, foreigners registered as Long Term Residency in Guangzhou were dominated by people from the advanced countries of Japan, South Korea, and occidental countries. As of July 2007, among the 16,131 foreigners registered as Long Term Residency and Permanent Residency in Guangzhou, the top four original countries were Japan (3,470), South Korea (1,385), India (1,523) and the United States (1, 010), the total population of which in Guangzhou accounted for 45.6% of the total. In terms of continents or regions, the foreigners coming from Asia topped the list, accounting for 59.2% of the total. Europeans ranked second (accounting for 12.09%). Foreigners for the Middle East ranked third (accounting for about 9.35%).
The regional statistics showed that the majority of foreigners living in Guangzhou live in the central urban areas. The statistics also showed that over half of the foreign population in Guangzhou (i.e., 57.61%) live in Tianhe and Yuexiu Districts. In addition, Guangzhou鈥檚 newly developed districts also gradually became new residency choices for foreigners. The statistics found that 13.55% of the foreigners on Long Term Residency and Permanent Residency live in Panyu, which was next only to Tianhe and Yuexiu Districts.
