The price of rice in China has witnessed its fourth increase in the past two months, and many people have responded by keeping large quantities of rice in reserve at home. Fortunately, between May 1 and July 30, thousands of tons of rice from the northeast of China will arrive to reduce pressure on the rice market, according to the Railway Minister.

Although the price of domestic rice has risen twenty percent, the cost of imported rice has remained stable, even depreciating in value in the case of Thai rice. Nevertheless, since imported rice is on average more expensive, sales of domestic varieties have remained strong.
Many Guangzhou residents find the increased prices hard to accept and prefer to buy rice in bulk to capitalize on its relatively low prices. According to merchants, the increasing cost of transportation lies behind the repeated price hikes. They and their customers can only hope that the influx of rice from the north helps solve this urgent situation.
