Communications authority of south China's Guangdong Province revealed a plan to build another bridge six kilometers away from the collapsed Jiujiang bridge that killed nine people last June.

The 5.63-kilometer-long Henan Xijiang bridge, which links Foshan and Jiangmen city along the Xijiang River, is estimated to cost 636 million yuan (89 million U.S. dollars), according to the provincial communications department on Friday.

The new bridge will boost transport in the Xijiang River region, which was severely affected after the collapse of the Jiujiang bridge, China News Service quoted Gao Rongtang, head of the Foshan municipal communications bureau, as saying.

The Jiujiang bridge collapsed on June 15 last year after a cargo vessel ploughed into a section of the 1,600-meter-long bridge. Four cars plunged into the river and nine people were killed. An investigation proved that the design of the bridge was not faulty.

The Jiujiang bridge is currently under repair and is expected to open to traffic by the end of this year.
