Recently, the abnormal cold extreme weather hit China nation wide. Over 100,000 passengers returning to their hometowns in Northern China were stranded in Guangzhou for no-expedite traffics. Starting from January 27th, 2008, all levels of civil affairs departments in Guangzhou dispatched cotton wadded garments, cotton wadded quilts, solid foods, mineral water, etc. to the passengers stranded at the Guangzhou Railway Station in succession. However, the repertories of warm materials were in short supply because of the overcrowded people. On January 28th, Guangzhou Municipal Civil Affairs Bureau launched an Emergency Relief Plan for the first time, preparing urgently a parcel of materials to be forwarded to the Guangzhou Railway Station and calling on all walks of life to actively donate.
According to the instructions of the leaders of the Guangzhou Municipal CPC Committee and the Guangzhou Municipal Government and to save the passengers from suffering cold and hunger, the General Office of the People's Government of Guangzhou Municipality urgently organized the cadres and employees at offices under the municipal government in the municipal government courtyard to donate warm clothes. Within 3 hours, all the cadres and employees of the General Office and offices under Guangzhou municipal government went home and brought back garments and quilts. The municipal government courtyard had collected 4,125 clothes and 672 quilts, which were then delivered to the civil affairs departments. These garments and quilts will soon be dispatched to the stranded passengers.
On the afternoon of January 28th, the Guangzhou Social Donation Reception Workstation received donations from individuals and enterprises. Among others, the Evergrande Real Estate Group, Junhua Group and other enterprises took the lead in donating military overcoats, cotton wadded garments and cotton quilts. The Evergrande Real Estate Group in particular donated over 2,000 cotton overcoats with a value of over RMB 200,000.
