Approximately 200,000 passengers were stuck at Guangzhou railway station last night (January 27) after a power failure caused by snow, ice and sleet brought more than 136 electric trains to a halt in Hunan province on the trunk line between Beijing and Guangzhou.

Train ticket sales suspended

The Guangzhou Railway Group announced that it has suspended train ticket sales in Guangdong amid worry that the weather will worsen and that train transportation is not likely to resume soon. The suspension took effect yesterday (January 27) and is scheduled to last until February 6th. All passengers can get full refunds within 10 days of their departure day. No fines will be charged for the refund.

Traffic on Beijing-Guangzhou line gradually resumes

As of 6 PM yesterday, 35 trains departing from Guangzhou have resumed operation and 22 other trains departed through special routes by arrangement. Traffic on the line between Beijing and Guangzhou is now gradually being resumed.

Buses on Beijing-Zhuhai expressway being evacuated

Road traffic between Hunan and Guangdong provinces has also ground to a halt. Traffic was at a standstill yesterday (January 27) on the southern section of the expressway linking Beijing with Zhuhai in Guangdong, where 60,000 people were stuck in some 20,000 vehicles. The express way company has organized staff to send food and water to passengers, and is taking measures to evacuate buses and send passengers back to their points of departure.
