On the morning of January 1st, 2008, 10,000 people gathered at the South Plaza of the Tianhe Sports Center, welcoming the arrival of the New Year with a unique traditional way 鈥 the 2008 Guangzhou New Year's Day 10,000 Person Walk was ceremoniously held, which was themed with "Welcome Olympic Games, Undertake Asian Games, Keep Fit, and Promote Harmony". At 9:30, 800 homing pigeons, symbolizing social harmony, soared to the sky. Vice Mayor Xu Ruisheng of Guangzhou City announced the official launch of the walk. Bathed in the warm winter sun, over 10,000 people started off, forming a nearly 3-kilometer long queue.
The over 10,000 participants of the Walk are from over 160 units of the units directly under Guangzhou City, various districts (County-level cities), institutional units, corporate groups, various colleges and schools directly under Guangzhou City, the PLA Guangzhou Garrison, and the Armed Police force. Many were not usual participants to the Walk. And many citizens took part in the Walk together with their families. The Walk route started at the South Plaza of the Tianhe Sports Center, via Tiyu Road, W., Tianhe Road, N., Tiyu Road, E., Tianhe Road, running around 4 kilometers.
The Guangzhou New Year's Day 10,000 Person Walk is one of the branded public sports activities with an over 20 year history.
