Driven by the soaring price of meats, consumer prices hit a new high, rising by 4.5% compared with the same period of last year and increasing by 0.3% last month. According to the Guangdong Survey Organization under the administration of China's National Bureau of Statistics, the Consumer Price Index in August saw an increase of 4.6% in the cities and an increase of 4.2% in the rural areas. Meanwhile, prices of consumer goods increased by 5.9% and prices for services by 0.6%.
Of all the major goods and services, food boasted an increase of 12.1% in price, medical care and personal objects 5.1%, house rental 3.4%, household appliances as well as maintenance services 2.1%, cigarettes and liquids 0.8%. In contrast, some goods saw a reduction in price, 4.2% for Stationery and entertainment services, 2.9% for clothing, and 0.4% for transport and communication.
