Guangzhou is expected to organize another swim across Pearl River following last year's success. Before the event, Guangzhou Mayor Zhang Guangning inspected the Pearl River, and urged related departments to further improve the water quality.

The water quality is much better in comparison to the same period last year, according to weekly tests of the Pearl River. However, it is not yet good enough for daily swimming, and more efforts must be made to clean up the river, said Zhang, during the inspection.

Across Pearl River Swim is for promoting environmental protection and calling for more support from the public to care for the Pearl River. Zhang also said.
