Fifteen bridges over the Pearl River will undergo thorough overhauls in the near future and the Pearl River Bridge will be equipped with a new collision avoidance system.
There are over one thousand bridges in Guangzhou, fifteen of which are over navigable waters and will be inspected with the possible installation of collision avoidance systems as the focus.
The Pearl River Bridge was built 47 years ago and has been hit by boats many times. Some of the details of the collision avoidance system include 200 rubber fenders to be afixed to protect bridge piers and 28 warning lights will be deployed for navigation during the night and inclement weather. The estimated cost of this equipment is approximately RMB 4 million (about USD500 thousand).
