Gaps in the policy of Guangzhou's street number management will soon be resolved. On May 29th, the Municipal Government convened an executive meeting wherein the new Guangzhou City Street Numbers Management Regulations were considered and approved in principle guaranteeing a logical function of street numbers.

Since October 2005, after 50 years of use, the old ceramic street number plates have gradually disappeared from the doorways of homes in Guangzhou. About 550,000 sets street numbers in 6 Districts--Yuexiu, Haizhu, Liwan, Tianhe, Baiyun and Huangpu-were replaced free of charge but punishment measures to those not installing the new numbers and for those who willfully damage number plates are still lacking.

In order to strengthen the establishment and management of the new system of street numbers according to the "Guangzhou City Names Ordinance" and relevant provisions of the country, and in consideration of the actual situation in Guangzhou, related authorities formulated the Guangzhou City Street Numbers Management Regulations. The Regulations erased the gaps in the policy on street numbers management helping to standardize the street numbers placement, secure the normal function of street numbers, and enable the public security organizations to carry out their work in accordance with normal laws and regulations.
