More than two thousand years ago, if people wanted to land on the Pearl River's south bank near the capital of Nanyue Kingdom, they had to pass through a sluice gate. Now archaeologists have found that the sluice gate's remnants are very likely at the first floor underground of the Guangning Plaza on Xihu Road, Guangzhou.
"If city walls are discovered at the east side of the sluice gate's ruin, then the sluice gate is undoubtedly the southern tip of Nanyue's capital." said Feng Yongqu, Director of the Guangzhou Archaeology Institute. On June 9, China's Cultural Heritage Day, the Nanyue sluice gate ruin--the earliest, largest and best preserved wooden structure sluice gate remnant found in the world--will open to the public. People will be able to visit the "Nanyue Cultural Relics"-- the sluice gate ruin, the Nanyue Palace ruin on Zhongshan Si Road and the Nanyue King's Tomb on Jiefang Road.
