The Pearl River drainage area Flood Control Plan was recently approved by the State Council. In the first flood control plan of the seven drainage areas to be approved by the State Council, an overall arrangement was made on flood and storm control in the Pearl River Drainage area. Following the implementation of the plan, a complete flood mitigation system will be established. By 2025, Guangzhou City will be able to withstand a big flood like the 1915 flood at Xijiang River and Beijiang River (occurring once every 200 years); important cities, such as Nanning, Shenzhen, Liuzhou, Wuzhou, and Guilin, and the key flood protection areas in the Pearl River Delta will be able to deal with a flood (tide) that is only likely to occur once every 100 - 200 years; other important flood protection areas will be able to deal with a flood (tide) that is likely to occur once every 50 - 100 years; normal flood protection areas will be able to deal with a flood (tide) that is likely to occur once every 10-20 years.
By then, the flood risk of the drainage area will be significantly reduced and the flood handling capability will be greatly enhanced. If a medium flood occurs, usually there is no disastrous effect; if a big flood or super-flood occurs, the safety of the city and key regions can also be guaranteed and the possibility of a devastating disaster will be avoided.
