Video monitoring systems (the "electronic eyes") have now been installed on 1,400 buses in Guangzhou, and will be installed on all buses in the city this year. Also, metro trains are expected to gradually feature "electronic eyes" in the future.
However, video monitoring systems are prohibited in washrooms, bathrooms, changing rooms, hotel rooms, dormitories and other places that may violate the privacy of citizens.
Last year, the city's "electronic eyes" provided 1,297 clues for the investigation of criminal cases. "Guangzhou City Public Security Video System Management", to be implemented on May 1st, defined 13 categories of "public safety sites", including airports, harbors, railway stations, docks, parking lots, passenger and cargo transport stations, major bus stops and large public transport vehicles (buses, tramcars, passenger ships).
The video systems of Guangzhou will be completed by the end of this year for 24-hour monitoring of the "public security sites" in the whole city, said Wang Yuexi, the Deputy Director of Informatization Office of Guangzhou Municipality. With the installation of 100,000 new "electronic eyes" this year, the city's "electronic eyes" will total more than 200,000.
