The Guangzhou Water Supply Company has planned to update about 45.6 km of old water mains in the old urban areas in three years. The total investment is estimated to be about RMB 183 million. RMB 32.7 million will be invested this year for changing 9.9 km of old water mains.

In recent years, water mains burst frequently in the old urban districts of Guangzhou. Streets, households and shops were flooded; some homes had no water to use.

An expert pointed out that the "the two reasons of water mains burst are natural aging and damage during construction projects".

To ensure a reliable water supply and to reduce the occurrence of accidents due to natural aging, the Guangzhou Water Supply Company plans to use a three-year period to replace 45.6 km of the city's old water mains. The frequent water main bursts in the old urban area are expected to be considerably reduced.
