The draft law on promoting employment to be reviewed by the legislators would improve the country's employment situation if it tackles several key issues, says a signed article in Guangzhou Daily. An excerpt follows:

According to Xinhua News Agency, a draft law on employment promotion is going to be reviewed at the meeting of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress scheduled for February 26 to 28.

Since the country's employment situation is still difficult, a specific law-promoting employment is both necessary and timely.

It would not only help improve the lives of those needing a hand in finding jobs, but also give substantial support to protecting the interests of all workers.

Judging from the current job market, there are three key issues that a new law should tackle.

The major problem is employment discrimination. Various types of discrimination abound in job advertisements, involving gender, age, physical conditions, academic education and even household registration addresses. All are obstacles for people seeking equal job opportunities.

The law should also include measures to facilitate business start-ups. More jobs will be created only when those who want to start businesses can easily open companies.

The third issue of major significance is that the employment rate should be included in evaluating the performances of local governments.

Promoting employment will be firmly carried out if the employment rate becomes part of the standard for assessing local government officials.
