On the early morning of February 12, a gigantic pure gold coin, weighing 10 kilograms, arrived at Guangzhou's Dongshan Department Store. The coin, the first of its kind issued by the People's Bank of China, has a price tag of RMB 3.38 million. It's the most expensive of the commemorative gold and silver coins issued by the Central Bank on December 18 last year for the Year of the Pig.
These commemorative coins are available in 13 sizes, with the gold ones coming in seven sizes and the silver ones in six sizes, weighing 0.1 ounce to 10 kilograms.
The 10kg gold coin has a purity of 99.9% and a diameter of 180mm, with a face value of RMB 100,000. The Central Bank had intended to issue 18 such coins, but only had time to make seven before the Lunar New Year, with one arriving in Guangzhou. They are the heaviest Lunar New Year commemorative gold coins in the world.
