The reporter was told that the emergency section of the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University treats over three foreign patients every day, and the number surges during the Canton Fair period. However, due to language barriers, doctors have great difficulty in understanding foreign patients, let alone treating them.

With the growth of foreign residents in Guangzhou, the medical market specializing in treating foreigners has gradually taken shape.

In foreigners' eyes, medical costs in China are relatively cheap compared with their own countries. Therefore, more and more foreigners take the chance of travel to Guangzhou for medical treatment.

On the other hand, some foreigners doubt the pay-first system which is different from other countries. Sometimes, they feel the hospital is taking advantage of them.

Facing a big potential market, many foreign insurances companies plan to cooperate with local hospitals in order to tap the market of foreigners' medical treatment. However, most hospitals show no interest in entering the business due to the amount of translation work involved.
