The 9th Guangzhou Convention of Overseas Chinese Scholars in Science and Technology kicked off at Pazhou on December 28.
According to the Convention Office, of the 163 projects proposed by overseas Chinese scholars which have been short-listed for the finals of the Overseas Chinese Scholars Innovation and Business Startup Competition, more than 130 have found investors, with preliminary letters of intents signed. The remaining 30 projects have also had prospective venture capitalists.
Guangzhou Business Startup Park has attracted 45 projects, the highest number among all startup parks in China.
On the morning of December 27, the Overseas Chinese Scholars Innovation and Business Startup Competition officially kicked off. At the venue of the competition, officials from 16 business startup parks throughout China, including the Beijing Haidian Business Startup Park for Overseas Chinese Scholars, Beijing Zhongguancun International Business Incubation Park, Shanghai Zhangjiang Business Startup Park for Overseas Chinese Scholars and Guangzhou Business Startup Park for Overseas Chinese Scholars, conducted talks with Chinese scholars from abroad about their projects.
Guangzhou Business Startup Park proved a magnet for outstanding projects. By the end of December 27, the Park had reached agreements with overseas Chinese scholars on 45 projects, most of which are about biopharmaceuticals, software, and animation.
Shen Ping, Director of Guangzhou Business Startup Park's Service Center, said that the park enjoys unique advantages in attracting projects, has a considerable international presence, and is equipped with a complete range of facilities. So far, Guangzhou has built an incubator of 370,000 square meters and supporting facilities of more than 200,000 square meters in the "Science Town". The local government plans to build another incubator of 230,000 square meters, bringing the total size of incubation space to more than 800,000 square meters. This figure will make Guangzhou China's largest business incubator.
In light of the policies announced recently by the local government for supporting software and animation industries, the Business Startup Park will implement further measures for this purpose, which explains why so many projects have intended to establish a presence in the park.
