According to the Guangzhou Construction Committee, the widely publicized Guangzhou Origin Design Scheme has been selected. An Origin symbol made of granite and copper with a historical introduction on it will let the public know that this is Guangzhou's city Origin, a city with over 2,200 years of history.

The neighborhood of People's Park in Yuexiu District has been the ancient urban area since the Qin and Han dynasties; it is still the town center, recording Guangzhou's history. However, with the expansion of Guangzhou, town centers have increased. Therefore it has become more and more urgent to establish an Origin for Guangzhou City. Guangzhou municipality decided to make the South Plaza of People's Park on Guangzhou's traditional Central Axis as the city Origin, which symbolizes the hub of a city's administration, culture, commerce, regional transportation, etc. This means every inch of the land in Guangzhou will have coordinates, and all the key buildings and historic sites in the city can be marked out their orientation and the distance to the Origin.
