Shenzhen is a seashore city in the southern part of Guangdong Province. It borders Hong Kong Special Administrative Region to the south and the cities of Dongguan and Huizhou to the north.
Shenzhen faces Dapeng Bay and Daya Bay to the east, and the mouth of the Pearl River to the west.
The city covers an area of 1,952.84 square kilometres, including a special economic zone area of 395.81 kilometres.
Currently the average age of Shenzhen residents is 30.8 years. It is the only Guangdong city where Putonghua or standard Chinese is its major language. Shenzhen is a migrant city with residents coming from all over the country.
Located in the south of the Tropic of Cancer, Shenzhen enjoys a subtropical climate. The city has an ideal climate with an annual average temperature of 22.3C. Shenzhen's annual average sunshine reaches 2,060 hours. The city has plenty of rainfall, with the average annual rainfall reaching a volume of 1,924.7 millimetres.
The rainfall season starts from May and ends in September. As a coastal city, Shenzhen is struck by a typhoon once or twice a year.
Shenzhen has 229.96 kilometres of coastline. It has six deepwater piers that link it to the province's inland areas by 160 waterways.
Shenzhen has a total of 247 reservoirs, including nine big and medium-sized ones, with a total capacity of 525 million cubic metres.
Located in the eastern part of the city, Shenzhen Reservoir, which has a capacity of more than 40 million cubic metres, is the major drinking water source of residents of Shenzhen and bordering Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
The southern metropolis has natural fresh water resources of more than 1.93 billion cubic metres.
