Approved by the State Environmental Protection Administration of China on September 30th 2006, the Liken Power plant, the first one in Guangzhou that turns rubbish into electricity, went into operation, broadening ways of recycling household waste. A ceremony was held with those present including Mayor Zhang Guangning, Executive Vice Mayor Ling Weixian and officials from relevant departments. After the ceremony, Mayor Zhang inspected the operation of the power plant.
With advanced technology in refuse incineration and treatment of flue gas, the environment-friendly power plant was designed to deal with 1040 tons of household waste a day. The power plant, located in the Yongxin Village the Taihe Town of the Baiyun District, was managed under contract by the ONYX Company of France. The municipal government spent RMB725 million (about US$90 million) building the power plant.
New style furnaces which generate another 20% of electricity compared with common furnaces popular in present domestic power plants, were used for the first time in China. The two production lines have run smoothly since the trial operation last October. The power plant supplies 130 million KWH a year with a power of 22 thousand KVA, satisfying electricity consumption of 100 thousand families.
