Yang Fangfang, a Guangdong Angiostrongylus Cantonensis patient was discharged from hospital September 2. Angiostrongylus Cantonensis is a parasite, a worm, of rats.
Infected rats pass immature forms of the worm in their feces and Snails and slugs get infected by eating infected rat feces. In the beginning of July, Yang went to a Sichuan restaurant in Beijing called Shu Guo Yan Yi and ordered apple snails.
After eating the snails he suffered severe headaches and a high temperature. Last week he was diagnosed with Angiostrongylus Cantonensis by Southern Medical University.
His condition has improved, but it will take two years for him to fully recover. Last month, many dinners also got the disease after eating uncooked snails in the same restaurant.
