A Guangdong government conference on August 28 examined and approved an energy development strategy for the 11th Five Year Plan Period, from 2005 to 2010.

According to the plan, "energy development and saving" will be the basic principal. Development of the West-to-East power transmission project will be the key energy strategy over the next five years.

The province will also speed up construction on energy infrastructures and promote clean energy. According to a report released by the central government in July, Guangdong was rated highest for its low energy consumption cost for GDP growth.

According to the report Guangdong consumed 0.79 tons of standard coal to generate 10,000 yuan of GDP. Guangdong is working to become a more energy-efficient province, aiming to reduce the unit energy consumption to 0.69 tons of standard coal by 2010.
