During the May Day Golden Week, Guangzhou Municipal Transportation Committee launched the city's first ever taxi radio call station at the Favorview Palace. The station has been welcomed by local citizens, receiving more than 100 calls every day.
Miss Deng, a resident at the Favorview Palace, said, "It's not easy for us to catch a taxi from here, but the opening of the radio call service will help us a lot."
Nevertheless, some residents complain that it is hard to call a taxi during rush hours and on rainy days. Officers with Guangzhou Municipal Transportation Committee say that they are monitoring the service of the taxi radio call station at the Favorview Palace closely, and will build more such stations to facilitate local residents' transportation.
So far, 10,728 taxis in the city have been equipped with integrated management service systems that provide a number of functions, such as vehicle positioning and tracking, protection against hijacking and robbery, and radio calling. The system has proved useful in reducing taxi vacancy, easing the pressure of rising fuel costs on the taxi industry, and facilitating passenger transportation.
The Transportation Committee plans to build another 20 fixed taxi radio call stations in out-of-the-way residential complexes and major shopping areas.
