Guangdong closed down all 10 remaining mines in Meizhou city, Monday (April 10th). The closure of the mines was the last of the operating coal mines in Guangdong to be shut down.
Guangdong government decided to withdraw from the mining industry in the wake of a serious coal mine flood in eastern Guangdong's Xingning city in August 2005. Owners of the 10 mines, which are all legal mines with licenses, agreed to shut down their pits because of safety concerns raised by the government. The government has implemented supportive measures for the 10 coal mines and will provide assistance for relocation work.
