Shenzhen policemen monitor the burning of 10 tons of fireworks they seized recently from illegal vendors, at a reclamation site in eastern Yantian port yesterday. Police said they will crack down on any challenge to the ban, citing reasons for public security. A firecracker ban is still effective in the city although about 200 Chinese cities have partially or completely lifted the decade-old ban. Setting off firecrackers during the Spring Festival, a tradition passed down from generation to generation, is seen by many as a must for festival celebration.
