2 Taiwanese suspects sent back home

GUANGDONG police repatriated two suspected Taiwanese criminals Wednesday as part of a cross-Straits efforts to fight crime, despite the political impasse between the two sides.

The two, including one of Taiwan's 10 most wanted-- Lin Cheng-hsing--were handed to Taiwanese autorities at Quemoy Island.

The practice was in line with the Kinmen Agreement signed between the two sides in the early 1990s for the repatriation of stowaways and criminals, officials said.

Police officers and officials from Taiwan's Red Cross and Straits Exchange Foundation, which acts as Taiwan's proxy in dealing with the mainland, were on hand to escort the criminals back.

Lin, 45, was arrested by mainland police in October, officials from the foundation said.

The convicted murderer was wanted for his alleged involvement in the kidnapping of a city council speaker in Taichung in 2001, and a radio announcer and a video game tycoon in Taichung County in 2004. He fled to the mainland in 2004.

The other suspect, Wu Chao-shun, 39, was wanted for alleged misappropriation.
