SHENZHEN hospitals delivered dozens of babies Sunday, the first day of the New Year.
At Shenzhen Maternity and Child Health Hospital, 10 minutes after the countdown to the New Year, a 2.8-kg baby was born. The baby's mother, a Henan native, was very excited after she was informed that her newborn was the first of the year 2006 in the city. She said she was considering a New Year-related name for the baby to commemorate the special day.
Su Zitong was the first newborn at the Shenzhen Beijing University Hospital. Originally expected around Christmas Day, the 4-kg baby girl became the most precious New Year gift to the parents after being delivered at around 2:30 a.m. Sunday.
"I was sent to operation room waiting for labor Saturday and has to send mobile phone messages to my husband to encourage each other out of nervous," said her mother, who endured five hours of labor before delivering.
The parents named the girl Zitong, because the word "tong" in Chinese means red and prosperous, signifying the family will prosper and flourish.
