GUANGZHOU began issuing personal security cards to its residents Friday.
According to the city government sources, the cards will replace the residents' original medical insurance cards and will also be used for employment, social security and home loan issues.
Friday also saw the inauguration of Guangzhou’s electronic post office. Every Guangzhou citizen can apply for a free personal Web mailbox from this post office.
From this mailbox, a citizen can get timely information on such things as social security and taxation from relevant government agencies.
The electronic post office can accommodate as many as 10 million users. Apart from receiving information from various government agencies, a person can also use the mailbox to receive bills and penalty notices from the telecommunication and utilities departments.
An official from the city’s information office said that the government hoped to cover 50 to 70 percent of Guangzhou’s families within three years.
