Drivers using Shennan Thoroughfare, one of Shenzhen’s most important roads, will find traffic here smoother after the city implements a series of planned measures to make it faster and safer in the near future.

More subway passes will be built beneath the thoroughfare, which has been dubbed a “killer road,” according to the bureau.

The number of traffic lights will be reduced to make traffic smoother. Simultaneous switching will be used to control the lights so that all lights on the road will turn green or red at the same time to enable vehicles to travel longer distances with each change of the lights.

More taxi and bus stops will be set up around Metro exits along the road.

The traffic improvement project will be first implemented over a 23-kilometer section from Nanxin Crossing to Xinxiu Overpass. The remaining part of the road will be renovated when the Metro project underneath it is finished, the source said.

The local government has planned to finish a road network comprising eight north-south roads, eight east-west roads and three ring roads in the next five years.

The city has a policy giving priority to public transport, for which an additional 312 bus stations and terminals will be built in the near future.
