GUANGZHOU Mayor Zhang Guangning promised Friday (Sep 9th) to organize the 16th Asian Games as a world-class event in 2010.
The organizing committee of 16th Asian Games was collecting suggestions for the event's emblem, Zhang said.
Guangzhou had made an urban construction plan, including infrastructure, traffic management, energy resources and cultural relic protection, to prepare for the sports event, he said.
Guangzhou has adjusted its original design of the nine sports centers in the university town to meet the requirement of a world-class sports event.
The organizing committee, with China's Minister of Sports Liu Peng as the chairman and Guangdong Governor Huang Huahua as the executive chairman, will further expand its cooperation with the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) and all the OCA members over the next few years.
As a member of OCA, China would also actively participate in all the sports events organized by OCA and contribute to the development of Asian sports, said Liu Peng, who is also chairman of the Chinese Olympic Committee, at the opening ceremony of the 24th General Assembly of OCA in Guangzhou on Friday.
In July 2004 Guangzhou was awarded the right to host the 2010 Asian Games.
Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah, president of OCA, said he believed Guangzhou had the ability to hold an Asian Games of a high standard.
In addition to meeting Chinese sports officials and local government officials, Sabah, who arrived in Guangzhou on Wednesday, has also visited local sports fields, gyms and related facilities in the past two days.
He had high praise for the sports facilities Guangzhou has constructed.
